Hello everyone! Happy New Year! Hope you had a great #Diwali weekend. Our #Diwali weekend was great. Full of fun and laughter! #HappyHeart. Today's recipe is for Jiji's New Sweet Potato Chips. This is a brand new recipe that my Mum, sister and I came up with together and I am extremely excited to share with everyone. This is how the recipe came about. Mum was making her famous fried fish one weekend. The fried fish looked and smelled so good that I began to wonder how to taste the same flavors but a #vegetarian version. To me, the marinated fried fish looked like sweet potatoes. So we all decided to use the same fried fish marinade recipe but with sweet potatoes instead. My sister quickly marinated the sweet potato chips and fried them up. Everyone loved these chips! They were crispy, spicy, garlicky with just the right level of sweetness. They were all gone pretty quickly! Even the non-vegetarians loved them!

The recipe is quite easy. First sweet potatoes have to peeled and sliced. Then the marinade has to be prepared. Sliced sweet potatoes are then marinated for at least 30 minutes. This step is not necessary but the chips taste better when marinated for a bit. Then sweet potatoes are fried up in vegetable oil on medium heat. They can be served right away as is or with your favorite chutneys and sauces.

Serves 4

Prep time 10 minutes

Cook time 30 minutes


-4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced

-1 tbsp crushed garlic

-1 tbsp crushed ginger

-4 crushed Thai chilis

-2 tbsp lemon juice

-1 tsp turmeric

-2 tsp garam masala

-1/2 tsp salt or to taste

-2 tsp AP flour

-vegetable oil for frying


  1. Peel, wash and slice sweet potatoes. They should be sliced lengthwise, then sliced widthwise in 1/2 inch slices.

  2. Mix up the rest of the ingredients to make the marinade

  3. Add sweet potatoes to the marinade and mix well.

  4. Marinate for at least 30 minutes (optional).

  5. Heat up oil on medium flame.

  6. Add marinated sweet potatoes carefully and fry on each side until golden brown.

  7. Serve as is immediately or with chutneys.
